HYPOXI IN THE MEDIA
|
|
|
This month, Hypoxi was featured in:
Bella Beauty Magazine – "Bottoms Up"
The article describes how HYPOXI combines a vacuum and compression treatment whereby the skin is gently pulled and pushed, forcing toxins out of the tissue. This not only promotes the transport of fatty acids from fat-prone areas but improves the texture of the skin and benefits elasticity, reducing the appearance of cellulite. And that’s the bottom line!

HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT THE MAGIC SEED THAT HELPS YOU DROP KILOS?
Revealing the Chia!

Chia Seeds are being touted as the new “Super Food”, and for good reason. Hypoxi’s resident nutritionist, Amy Dusseldorp, explains why.
Hands up those who have heard of Chia Seeds? Nutritionists are claiming that these tiny seeds are powerful in aiding weight loss and are packed full of nutrition. Since chia seeds absorb up to 9 times their weight in water and therefore give a feeling of fullness when eating. Trials have shown that just a tablespoon of soaked chia seeds in juice at breakfast can leave you feeling full until lunch. Diets often leave the body in need of nutritious food. The benefits of chia seeds is that they provide nutritional goodness with fewer calories, when incorporated in as part of a healthy diet.
These tiny black and white seeds pack a powerful nutritional punch, containing essential fatty acids (the best known vegetarian source of alpha-linolenic acid - omega-3), protein, soluble fibre, protective antioxidants, minerals and vitamins. Chia seeds are also an excellent source of antioxidants.
Chia seeds are also high in fibre, both soluble and insoluble. Soluble fibre absorbs water (as can be seen when chia seeds are placed in water) and has many benefits, including moderating blood glucose levels and reducing cholesterol. Insoluble fibre does not absorb or dissolve in water. It passes through the digestive system and offers many benefits to intestinal health, including regular gut function and can also lower the risk of colon cancer. You can get chia seeds from good health food stores and organic grocers – look out for them next time you are shopping.

TIPS FOR BETTER HEALTH
How much sitting is too much?

Bonnee Robinson looks at how sitting for hours at a desk in front of a computer can have a more detrimental effect on your health than you think!
Several studies in recent years have established that there is a strong connection between how much time you spend sitting down and your risk of significant health problems (especially obesity and diabetes).
A new study reported this week indicates that even as little as a few hours a day of continuous sitting causes metabolic changes that increase blood sugar levels and decrease the amount of fat used as fuel, therefore increasing the amount that goes back into storage as body fat.
It's important to understand that the issue here is not just that you burn fewer calories when you're sitting around. Long periods of sitting actually can cause unhealthy changes in your metabolism.
These studies are showing that extended sitting actually changes the way your body processes glucose and fat. When you are actively moving around, fat circulating in your blood stream will migrate towards active muscles to be taken in and used as fuel. But this study shows that when you are sitting still, the enzyme responsible for taking fat out of the bloodstream and into muscle cells is deactivated, and that circulating fat is instead picked up and stored by fat cells.
This study also indicates that even formal cardio exercise may not be enough to counteract or overcome these negative effects of sitting for long periods of time. Apparently, you can’t make up for sitting for hours at a time simply by making sure you get your 30-60 minutes of exercise every day.
But the good news is that short bouts of physical activity, spread through the day so that they interrupt your sitting time, can help reduce the negative effects of too much sitting. It doesn’t have to be high intensity activity, like cardio exercise—simply getting up and walking around the office or the house for 5 minutes every hour can really help.
So get your touché moving today – try and make a habit of getting up on the hour for just a few minutes and see if you notice the difference after 30 days.

HYPOXI RECIPE OF THE MONTH
Berry Bircher Muesli
|
|
If you’ve booked a HYPOXI session for the morning, it’s important to eat a healthy, low GI breakfast first to prevent blood sugar fluctuations and ensure optimal energy. If you’re in a rush, as we often are, try preparing a Bircher muesli the night before and having a small bowl with some fresh berries before HYPOXI. This recipe makes a batch of six serves so keep in a sealed container and enjoy over the week, or share with housemates.
Ingredients (serves 6)
|
|
 |
|
• 3 cups rolled oats (see note)
• 1 1/2 cups unsweetened apple juice
• 1 granny smith apple, coarsely grated
• 1/2 cup slivered almonds, toasted
• 2 small limes, juiced
• 1 cup plain low fat yoghurt
• 1 cup mixed fresh berries (we used blackberries, strawberries, raspberries) (frozen is fine too)
• 2 tablespoons honey
Method
1. Place oats in a large bowl. Pour over apple juice to cover. Stir to combine. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours.
2. Just before serving, stir in apple, almonds, 1/4 cup lime juice, 3/4 cup yoghurt and 3/4 cup mixed berries.
3. Spoon muesli into bowls. Top with remaining yoghurt and mixed berries. Drizzle with honey. Serve immediately.
Notes
• This recipe is best made 1 day in advance.
• Use regular (not quick-cooking) rolled oats for this recipe.
• Tip: You could replace the yoghurt in step 3 with low fat milk.
